September 1999 to Present - Ricardo Consulting Engineers

Job Title: Web Applications Programmer

Background: Based in Shoreham West Sussex, Ricardo Consulting Eng. employs around 800 people, their primary business is in the design, testing and prototype manufacture of components for the automotive industry. I work as part of the 15-20 strong IT team. Working as part of the ~20 strong IT team I am the main developer for the companies Intranet based Knowledge Management system and one of two developers working on the Company web site (www.ricardo.com). In addition to these duties I also provide support for the Intranet, database development and business specific VB development..

Current Duties: Developer of the group's Intranet based knowledge management system supporting around 1300 users across the Ricardo group. The system consists of HTML pages and JAVA Servlets and is built around a large SQL Server 7.0 database. SQA is handled by me using Visual Source Safe 6.0 and a custom Access 97 database for logging bugs/requests etc. that I designed and implemented for the task. Backup Administrator for above system, installation and configuration of server and supporting applications. Installation, configuration and template modification for the Verity Search search engine.

Previous Duties: Maintenance and enhancement of the company Intranet and Web Presence using tools such as Microsoft FrontPage 98/2000, Macromedia Drumbeat 2000 (ASP), Flash 4.0 and Dreamweaver 3.0. Database design, maintenance and creation using Microsoft Access 97, and Visual Basic 6. Developed a prototype browser based system that allowed for the storage, completion and submitting of weekly time sheets for the whole site. Build around an Access database and using ASP, ADO, COM, JavaScript and VBScript. Designed and implemented corporate screensaver in Visual Basic using ADO, displays company notices by retrieving information from the KM SQL Server.

Nov 1997 to Present - Independent Computer Consultant

Working within the local area, advising clients on computer purchases. Installation and troubleshooting of hardware and software under Windows 95 / 98. Training in Internet applications, Office 97 and Windows 95/98. Training given in MS-Office and Internet applications; Outlook, Explorer, FTP etc. Complete design, creation and maintenance of several personal and small business web sites. Main duties included the original setup and management of the company Web-Site, Email and Stock Database. Design and formatting of the weekly adverts, which were published in ‘Amateur Photographer’ magazine. Dealing with customer queries and retail cash / credit card sales via the telephone. Some exposure to digital photography techniques.

Working in the shop gave me experience in many of the necessities of a genuine working environment e.g. punctuality, reliability and self motivation, as well as the ability to work with others and use my own initiative when necessary.

1995 to 1997 - Vacant Property Specialists - Buckinghamshire

Worked for the above company on a sub-contract basis maintaining the gardens of properties on the books of various Estate Agents in the South of England.

1993 to 1997 - Logs ‘n’ Things - Turners Hill, West Sussex

Set up the above business to generate some extra income. Business was in the supply of burning logs, lighting wood, charcoal etc. to the public within the local area.

 

INTERESTS
 

My Main Interests are:

  • I take an active interest in the environment with outdoor activities such as Golf, Cross-Country Mountain Biking and general Photography. I enjoy travel and commute regularly to Canada to visit family. I enjoy films and music as well as eating out and socialising with friends.
  • I like to keep up to date with the cutting edge in several areas of science and technology and consistently read numerous magazines, books and web pages. I am always seeking new fields in which to increase my knowledge of IT and computing in general.
  • I have a full clean Driving License held since September 1993.
  • I am a Graduate Member of the British Computer Society and an active participant in their Continuing Professional Development program.
